New Mirrror Poem while Blondie Rocked Glastonbury

With a couple of hours of battery life, and feeling that he hadn’t created enough for a World Cup Rest Day, and with four days of World Cup double games days on the horizon, Marc Latham clunked out yet another Folding Mirror poem last night.

Hi, it’s Howlin’ Werewolf, satirical comedy music correspondent at the greenYgrey inspired by legendary Blues singer Howlin’ Wolf.

Marc wrote his poem while watching Blondie at Glastonbury on television, and thought they played a great set. I watched it too, and in addition to the classic old songs, I really liked the uplifting Mile High and the heavy metallish guitar and drum solos.

The greenYgrey justified its Glastonbury poster headlining status with a dramatic greatest hits set: producing thunder and lightning storms during the day, rainbows, and then a spectacular sunset in the evening.

Musical bands come and go, but the weather sings forever.

Mirror Poem Explanation

However, Marc Latham’s new mirror poem kind of takes the opposite view, in a greenYgrey kind of way, extolling the virtues of thought in creatures great and small; and how one thought by a small animal such as a mouse is better in that way than all the gigantic unthinking reactions in space.

In a greenYgrey way, human thoughts are the best and worse we know, but animals have a lot of nice and nasty ones too; with the former shown by their caring for each other.

Marc wrote on fmpoetry.wordpress.com that ‘the title and last line refers to a single thought of a small creature being superior in that way to great giant stars, which just work unthinkingly by thermonuclear reactions. The last line also plays on the British television series about a vet, All Creatures Great and Small. So although the universe is mindbogglingly massive, life as we know it on Earth is the best we know for thinking.’

crunch time for mortal minds
strangles infinite breath
day drags for damselfly
century crows to humanity
instinct, learning, loving, expiring
endless summer days

winter limits light
experience, remembering, warming, gripping
holding on for dear
life becomes more refined
sailing history’s horizon
all creatures greater than sun

Marc Latham’s latest Folding Mirror poem was written out of nothing really, just stream of consciousness thinking watching Blondie at Glastonbury on T.V. at the end of June, 2014.

Poem Explanations

The title and last line refers to a single thought of a small creature being superior in that way to great giant stars, which just work unthinkingly by thermonuclear reactions. The last line also plays on the British television series about a vet, All Creatures Great and Small.

So although the universe is mindbogglingly massive, life as we know it on Earth is the best we know for thinking. Here’s the poem:

Mirror Poem about Mind Processing Natural Inspiration

I am life, until I am death. It might seem that middle-age is half way between the two, but you are much longer dead than alive. In one body anyway. So in middle-age you are still life. Moreover, your life might live on through your descendants, or you could be reincarnated, or just your life remembered in memories, history and the arts.

I hope you don’t mind the slightly maudling introduction, but I’m just trying to connect Marc Latham’s latest Folding Mirror poem with the next reflection from his 242 Mirror Poems and Reflections book.

I fear I may have indulged in a little introspective philosophising myself.

Reflection 16 mirrored Middle-Age Memories, a poem posted on fmpoetry.wordpress.com in May 2012. It was:

Our age is one of great importance,
for it is the only one we’ll know.

Mirror Poem about Natural Inspiration for Mind

Marc Latham’s latest Folding Mirror poem was inspired by a hazy half-moon night, inspiring the thoughts of this poem. He thought how much more he would have thought if he’d spent more time under it, like the ancients did before writing down things; or even people of the last century before the age of television. Some people do still live like that of course, all over the world.

One Way Optic Nerve, Visual Cortex Return Signals 

some times you see what you look for
other things just come into view
often the scenery is normal
occasionally it’s surprising too
sky changes colour at least twice daily
although clouds often obscure the view

time changes everything, memory records moments

but best times always fly obscured
in mental zone of ephemeral thoughtless focus
when brain runs automatically

Yes, that’s right, after Debbie Harry was declared the D of growth, it is now time for thought.

And we have decided that the Dalai Lama should represent thought.

 

 

Although we are agnostic about religion, so keep an open mind about reincarnation, and don’t really believe the Dalai-Lama is goddish, he does represent a religion known for its thought, peacefulness and consideration for all life.

Thinking about Thought

While thinking deeply isn’t for everybody, and we think there can be a wisdom to avoiding thinking, and just living to be happy in the moment, we also think that some thinking time can be of value sometimes.

While some people might have a natural propensity to think, as some people have an innate talent for arts or sports, we think that practise is  likely to make perfect… or more perfect than before anyway.

Buddhist Meditation and Yoga

So, we think that people who think a lot through meditation, yoga or just taking time out from the constant communications of modern life, are more likely to develop their thinking.

Although the Dalai Lama may not be the best thinker in Buddhism, and Buddhism might not really produce the best thinkers, we have decided to choose the Dalai Lama, as he is the big cheese of Buddhism, and his name starts with a D.
